Friday may have been the first time in his life that Messi was someone else’s opening act. The USWNT did what was expected, beating a lesser team in Vietnam, but they also have a lot of work in front of them.

A brace from US soccer’s newest superstar Sophia Smith and a late goal from Lindsey Horan was enough to give the defending champion a dream start as it begins a historic World Cup campaign. CNN —The 2023 Women’s World Cup Championship begins this week in Australia and New Zealand, and will be, for all appearances, a victory lap for gender equality in sports. Additionally, not all the physiological evidence lines up in men’s favor when it comes to athletic performance. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that the most popular sports worldwide are those that also most exaggerate underlying gender differences. Would the gap in athletic performance persist if girls truly had the same opportunities as boys to play at all levels? Known as 'Liberty Alex', the work is crafted from hard-coated and reinforced foam with a 3-D printed resin head and trophy, and features Morgan draped in an American flag, posing like the iconic Statue of Liberty. Morgan, who will appear in her fourth World Cup, modeled the flag in an April photoshoot.
